Not a video to watch and not a chat. You pick one of the quarter past, half past, quarter to, on the hour times below, and at that moment you are on a video call with one other person who picked the same one. Each of you does your own work, in silence, until the timer runs out.
Rooms open on a fifteen minute grid, all day and all night, and a session lasts either twenty five or fifty minutes. You are paired only with someone who picked the same time and the same length, so pick the length first.

The times above come from the clock on your device, so they are already the ones you read on your own watch. Booking needs an account, which is free and takes an email address and a code.
The call opens by itself at the time you booked. The camera stays on for the whole session: the button to switch it off for a moment is there, for when somebody rings the doorbell, but the session happens on video, because a room where nobody can be seen is a room where nobody is really there. You are not required to show your face: plenty of people point the camera at the desk, at their hands, at the page they are working on.
The first thing to do is say in one sentence what you are going to do. Then the microphones go quiet and each of you works. At the end the timer stops on its own.
A time on the grid becomes a room when two people pick the same one. Two is enough.
If nobody booked your time, the session starts anyway. The timer runs, your minutes are recorded, and the session is saved as a solo one, because that is what it was. Nothing is hidden and nothing is inflated.
